Sinopse: In the opening five minutes of this documentary two memorable quotes immediately grab your attention. The first comes from an enthusiastic commentator who rhetorically asks, "Whose game is it? Michael Jordan's game." This may have been said in a moment of energetic excitement, but the words ring true. As do the more seasoned and professional articulations of former Phoenix Suns coach Paul Westphal, who after losing to Jordan's Chicago Bulls in the world championship, profoundly states what the world already knew: "No one can stop him." Sinopse: Basketball legend Michael Jordan stars in this quirky video about a young basketball player who was cut from his high school team. Jordan, playing himself, meets the man on a playground and proceeds to try and boost the youngsters apparent lack of self esteem. By walking the young man through his own life, Jordan shows how he overcame being cut from his high school team to become a collegiate and NBA champion; showing that if he can do it, anyone can. The film may or may not encourage youngsters, but the footage of Jordan's career is almost worth sitting through his tepid acting performance. The images of Jordan twisting and turning in air to score an impossible basket will capture the attention of the viewer, not the script Jordan is reading from. The words of wisdom expounded by Jordan are honorable and well intended. The video also includes a music video with Jordan basketball clips and rappers Kid n' Play.

This video clearly was designed to celebrate, not necessarily sketch out, the man and his history.

Early footage of Michael will delight longtime Bulls fans. Included are interviews with family members, school mentors (we meet the coach who made the now-famous cut of Michael from his high-school junior varsity team), and 1980s Bulls coach Doug Collins (complete with frizzy 'fro), and plenty of slam dunks, athletic ballet, and "Wanna Be Like Mike" charisma. Missing is mention of fellow University of North Carolina teammates James Worthy and Sam Perkins, as well as a decent hip-hop soundtrack (the music is early sports documentary cheezola), but these are small flaws compared to the man's jaw-dropping aerobics. Footage of the slam-dunk contest alone--where Jordan captured his own goal of taking off at the free-throw line and dunking at the hoop (complete with legs bent back in Air flight)--will leave viewers grinning and shaking their heads. His energy is endless, his creativity self-renewing, and his athleticism graceful and magical. This video is a fun peek into the youthful Michael now so far behind us. --Karen Karleski

Coach Carter - Treino para a Vida (Coach Carter) [2006]

Sinopse: O dono de uma loja de artigos esportivos aceita o convite para dirigir o time de basquete de sua antiga escola. Ao chegar ele impõe regras rígidas, que incluem boas notas, comportamento respeitoso e modo adequado de se vestir. Com Samuel L. Jackson. Richmond, Califórnia, 1999. O dono de uma loja de artigos esportivos, Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson), aceita ser o técnico de basquete de sua antiga escola, onde conseguiu recordes e que fica em uma área pobre da cidade. Para surpresa de muitos ele impõe um rígido regime, em que os alunos que queriam participar do time tinham de assinar um contrato que incluía um comportamento respeitoso, modo adequado de se vestir e ter boas notas em todas as matérias. A resistência inicial dos jovens acaba e o time sob o comando de Carter vai se tornando imbatível. Quando o comportamento do time fica muito abaixo do desejável Carter descobre que muitos dos seus jogadores estão tendo um desempenho muito fraco nas salas de aula. Assim Carter toma uma atitude que espanta o time, o colégio e a comunidade.

Hoop Dreams [1994]

Sinopse: Hoop Dreams is a documentary by U.S. director Steve James. The film follows the two African-Americans, William Gates and Agee Artuhe, visiting the St. Joseph High School in West Chester (Illinois). The school is attended mostly by whites and has an excellent basketball department. With 90 minutes to school, long and difficult training sessions and adapting to the new social environment, it is both hard to improve their athletic performance - and in a highly competitive labor market. Meanwhile, their families celebrate their successes and support each other in difficult times. In the film tries in different situations, issues such as race, class, social inequality, education and values and their importance in the United States to treat. At the same time, the film shows a good picture of life in the city center.
